A parent looking for a school used to begin with a fairly predictable Google search. They might type “independent schools near Oxford”, open several websites and gradually build a shortlist.
Increasingly, there is another option. They can ask an AI system a much more specific question.
“Which independent girls’ schools near Guildford have strong music and good pastoral care?”
“What are the best boarding schools within two hours of London for a child interested in science?”
“Compare independent sixth forms near Bristol with strong university destinations.”
The difference matters. Traditional search gives the parent a collection of links to investigate. An AI-generated answer may do part of that investigation for them, summarising several options and sometimes naming particular schools before the parent has visited a single school website.
For independent schools, that creates a new question: how does an AI system decide which schools belong in the answer?
There is no simple formula, and nobody can guarantee a recommendation. However, there are practical things schools can do to make themselves easier for both search engines and AI systems to discover, understand and trust.
AI needs to understand what kind of school you actually are
School websites are often written for people who already possess quite a lot of context.
A homepage may talk beautifully about curiosity, confidence, opportunity and preparing pupils for an exciting future, while leaving some surprisingly basic facts scattered across several pages.
Is the school day or boarding? Which ages does it serve? Is it co-educational or single-sex? Where exactly is it? Is entry selective? Does it offer weekly boarding? Is there a sixth form? What particular strengths distinguish it from nearby alternatives?
A human parent can eventually piece these things together. An AI system attempting to answer a detailed question also needs to establish them reliably.
This is where clear entity definition becomes important. In slightly less technical language, the internet needs to contain a consistent picture of what the school is.
That means the website should state important facts plainly rather than relying entirely on aspirational language. It also means those facts should agree across the homepage, admissions pages, directories, Google listings and other credible places where the school appears.
If one page calls the school a boarding school, another barely mentions boarding and an old directory still contains information from six years ago, there is more room for uncertainty.
AI visibility begins with being easy to understand.
The question is becoming more specific
Traditional school SEO has often focused on searches such as “independent school Surrey” or “private school near me”. Those searches remain important.
AI allows parents to become much more conversational.
Instead of searching separately for schools, fees, sport, dyslexia support and travel arrangements, a parent can potentially combine several requirements into one question. That changes the type of information a school needs to make discoverable.
Imagine a family asking:
“Which independent schools near Cambridge have strong academic results but are also suitable for a child who takes music seriously?”
A school website that simply says it provides “an outstanding all-round education” gives an AI system very little specific information to work with.
A website that clearly explains its academic approach, music provision, ensembles, individual tuition, scholarships, facilities and recent pupil outcomes provides considerably more.
This is not about stuffing pages with phrases designed for robots. It is about answering the real questions that distinguish one school from another.
The same principle applies to pastoral care, learning support, boarding, sport, transport, sixth-form choices and admissions. If these things matter to prospective families, they should be described clearly enough to be found and understood.
Useful content gives AI something useful to cite
Schools already contain a remarkable amount of expertise.
Heads, teachers, SEND specialists, houseparents, university advisers and admissions teams answer important parent questions every day. Much of that knowledge never reaches the website.
AI search makes publishing it more valuable.
A useful article might explain what parents should consider when choosing between day and boarding. A learning-support page could describe how pupils with dyslexia are assessed and supported. A sixth-form guide could explain how subject choices affect university applications. An admissions page could answer practical questions about entry points, assessments, scholarships and timelines.
This type of content serves two purposes.
It helps parents directly, whether they arrive through Google, social media or another route. It also gives search and AI systems clear material to draw upon when answering related questions.
Google’s own guidance for its AI search experiences makes essentially the same recommendation it has long made for ordinary search: create useful, reliable, people-first content that provides genuine value. There is no separate trick required to qualify for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
That is reassuring because it means schools do not need to begin producing strange pages written for machines. They need to become better at publishing the useful information they already possess.

Structured data helps, but it is not a magic AI switch
This is where discussions about Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, can become more technical than they need to be.
Structured data, usually added through schema markup, provides machines with additional information about what a page or organisation represents. Schema.org includes specific types for schools and educational organisations, allowing information to be expressed in a more structured, machine-readable format.
That can help search systems interpret information more confidently.
Schools can also use appropriate structured data for things such as articles, breadcrumbs and other supported content. FAQs can be written in a clear question-and-answer format even where a particular search platform does not provide a special FAQ result.
However, schema should not be sold as a button marked “recommend our school”.
Google explicitly states that structured data does not guarantee a particular search appearance, and its current guidance says there are no additional technical requirements specifically for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
The sensible approach is to use structured data as part of good technical housekeeping. It makes information easier for machines to interpret, but it still needs accurate content and genuine authority behind it.
Your own website is not the only source that matters
A school can describe itself perfectly and still not control everything an AI system sees.
When generating an answer, AI search tools may draw on multiple web sources. OpenAI explains that ChatGPT Search can use web search providers and ranks results using factors intended to identify relevant and reliable information.
For a school, that makes the wider digital footprint important.
Inspection information, educational directories, local coverage, awards, recognised partnerships, authoritative articles and other credible references can all contribute to the public picture of the school.
This is another reason to keep external information accurate. An old directory entry showing outdated fees or boarding arrangements is not simply untidy. It introduces conflicting information into an environment where parents and machines are both trying to establish facts.
Authority is also easier to demonstrate when other credible organisations recognise the school’s expertise or achievements. Publishing genuinely useful research, participating in respected educational initiatives and earning relevant coverage can therefore support visibility in ways that go beyond traditional link building.
The aim is to create a consistent body of evidence rather than expecting the school website to make every claim on its own behalf.
Local information still matters enormously
Many school searches are geographical because practical reality quickly intrudes on educational ambition.
A parent may want a highly academic school, but they also need to know whether the morning journey is possible. Boarding families may have different limits, but transport links, airports and weekend arrangements can still affect the shortlist.
Schools should therefore be precise about location and catchment.
A website can explain the towns and areas pupils commonly travel from, transport routes, school buses and relevant boarding arrangements. Google Business Profile information should be complete and accurate. Addresses, telephone numbers and other important details should be consistent wherever they appear.
This is not particularly glamorous GEO work, but it is useful.
An AI system asked for “independent schools within commuting distance of Sevenoaks” needs enough reliable information to judge relevance. If the school’s relationship to the location is unclear, another school may simply be easier to recommend.
Make sure AI search systems can actually reach the website
Even excellent content is of limited use if search systems cannot access it.
Technical SEO therefore remains part of AI visibility.
Pages need to load properly, important content should be indexable and the website should not inadvertently block the crawlers used by relevant search services. OpenAI, for example, advises website owners who want content to appear in ChatGPT search to allow its OAI-SearchBot crawler. It also makes clear that being accessible does not guarantee inclusion.
Google makes a similar point. To appear as a supporting link within its AI features, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search in the first place.
This is why GEO should not be treated as a replacement for SEO.
A slow website, poor internal structure, blocked pages and confusing content do not suddenly become irrelevant because the search box has become conversational. In many cases, the technical foundations are the same ones schools should already have been addressing.
Test what AI currently thinks about your school
One of the simplest exercises is also one of the most revealing.
Ask several AI search tools the questions a prospective family might genuinely ask.
Do not begin with the school’s name. Ask broader questions such as:
“Which independent schools near us are particularly strong in music?”
“What are good options for weekly boarding in this area?”
“Which schools offer strong learning support alongside academic stretch?”
Look at whether the school appears, but also examine how it is described.
Are the facts accurate? Which competitors are mentioned? What sources are being cited? Does the system appear to understand the school’s distinctive strengths, or does it produce the same generic description it could apply to almost anybody?
The answers will vary between tools and can change over time, so this is not a definitive ranking exercise. It is a useful way of identifying gaps.
If the school wants to be known for a particular strength but there is almost no clear, authoritative information about that strength online, the problem becomes visible very quickly.
The early advantage is clarity, not cleverness
AI search is still developing. The systems will change, the terminology will change and some of the confident predictions currently being made about GEO will undoubtedly look rather dated in a few years.
Schools therefore do not need to chase every new optimisation theory.
The more durable opportunity is to make the school unusually easy to understand.
Describe what makes it different in specific terms. Answer the questions parents genuinely ask. Keep important facts consistent. Publish useful expertise. Strengthen credible external signals. Maintain the technical foundations that allow search systems to find everything.
These things already improve ordinary search and the wider admissions journey. AI gives schools another reason to get them right.
Parents may still visit Google. They may still ask friends, study inspection reports, attend open days and spend far too long comparing fees in a spreadsheet.
Some will also ask an AI system which schools deserve a place on their shortlist.
When that happens, the schools most likely to benefit will not necessarily be those shouting most loudly about AI. They will be the ones that have made it easiest for both people and machines to understand why they should be considered.
